Café brings Peruvian flavor to downtown Bellingham

Sometimes it's the "what-if" conversations that lead to bigger things.
For Marco Mellet and Antonio Diaz, that discussion led to the founding of Café Rumba, which opened last week at 1140 N. State St., across the street from the Herald Building. The Peruvian-style deli offers soups, salads and sandwiches accompanied by a variety of sauces and grilled potatoes.
Mellet and Diaz met while working at the Copper Hog and started talking about what it would be like to have their own restaurant. Both are from Peru and wanted to introduce a style of food they each grew up with, Diaz said.

"We just clicked right away and soon we started seriously looking at places," Diaz said.

Peruvian deli, Cafe Rumba, opens in downtown Bellingham

There are quite a few options for multi-culturual cuisine here in Bellingham, and now we can add one more country to our list.
Cafe Rumba, a Peruvian Deli, opened this week, and the owners said their goal is to provide an unique and authentic food experience to Bellingham diners, particularly the lunch crowd.
Co-owner Antonio Diaz said he and fellow owner Marco Mellet met about a year ago at a previous job and discovered just how much they both had in common. They're both from Peru, wanted to share their food with others, and have a love for rumba music, hence the name of the cafe.
"We both enjoy being surrounded by that part of our culture," Diaz said. "It doesn't go well when it's quiet around here."
